The 23-member Malawi National Senior Football team has left the country for Quagadougou Burkina Faso through Chileka International Airport on Monday morning.
The team’s coach, Meck Mwase named the squad on Sunday for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) back-to-back qualifying matches against Burkina Faso away on Thursday before hosting the Bukinabes at home next week Monday.
Mwase’s squad comprises eight foreign-based players including John Banda, Schumacker Kuwali and Yamikani Chester and 15 locals who have been in camp for the past couple of weeks.
The other four players based in South Africa Gerald Phiri junior, Richard Mbulu, Dennis Chembezi and Limbikani Mzava will join the team in Johannesburg, while Moldova-based Charles Petro will meet the others in Ethiopia.
Mzava failed to join the team last month during their two international friendlies against Zambia and Zimbabwe as he was club-hunting. He is now contracted to Amazulu FC.
Flames' top striker Gabadinho Mhango is ruled out due to injury and Mwase has also dropped Chawanangwa Kawonga and budding Kenya-based forward Andrew Malisero from the squad that played the friendlies.
Mwase said in an interview recently that they are ready for the encounter and that they will work hard to ensure they get a win or at least a draw.
